Why Does My Dog Smell? 7 Causes and How to Fix Them
You've just given your dog a bath, and two days later that familiar "doggy smell" is back. Sound familiar? Dog odour is common, but it always has a cause. Understanding where it comes from helps you fix it — and know when it's time to see the vet.
Common reasons your dog smells
1. A damp coat
Wet fur that doesn't dry properly — after a bath, rain or a monsoon walk — is the number-one cause of "wet dog smell". Bacteria and yeast on the skin release odour when moist.
Fix: towel dry thoroughly, especially the thick undercoat, armpits and between the toes.
2. Natural skin oils building up
Dogs produce oils that keep skin healthy, but they build up over time and start to smell.
Fix: a regular bath every 2–4 weeks with a deodorising shampoo like Pawbara 5-in-1 Shampoo.
3. Dirty bedding and toys
Your dog's bed, blanket and soft toys absorb odour and transfer it straight back to a clean coat.
Fix: wash bedding weekly and toys every couple of weeks.
4. Ears
A yeasty or sour smell from the ears, with redness, scratching or head shaking, can mean an ear infection. Floppy-eared breeds are more prone.
Fix: see your vet — don't put home remedies into an inflamed ear.
5. Mouth and teeth
Bad breath often comes from plaque and gum disease.
Fix: regular tooth brushing with pet toothpaste and dental check-ups.
6. Anal glands
A sudden fishy smell and scooting along the floor can mean full anal glands. Your vet or groomer can help.
7. Skin infections or allergies
A strong, greasy smell with redness, hair loss or constant scratching needs a vet's attention.
A simple anti-odour routine
- Brush 3–4 times a week to remove dead hair and dust that trap smell.
- Bathe every 2–4 weeks with a pet shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
- Dry completely after every wash and every rainy walk.
- Use a dry bath between baths — Pawbara Dry Bath Spray refreshes the coat with no water.
- Finish with a pet perfume — a light mist of Pawbara Dogs Perfume on the back and body (never the face).
- Wash bedding weekly.
Why not just use human perfume or deodorant?
Human fragrances are made for human skin and can irritate a dog's skin and sensitive nose. Always use products made for pets, and use them lightly.
When to see a vet
If the smell comes back within a day or two of bathing, or comes with itching, redness, discharge, hair loss or a change in behaviour, the cause is likely medical. Grooming products freshen a healthy coat — they don't treat infections.
